New research reveals millions of drivers are selling blind, as Autotrader and SpudBros bring instant car valuations to life during an immersive drive-thru in Manchester

  • Nearly half of UK drivers (44%) don’t know what their car is worth, leaving many at risk of underpricing when they come to selling
  • Lack of clarity is already costing drivers, with almost half (45%) previously being disappointed by the amount they received when selling a car
  • To help make it easier for people to know the value of their car, Autotrader has partnered with viral food duo SpudBros to open the ‘Autotater’ drive-thru in Manchester, giving drivers a free jacket potato and an instant car valuation in under 10 seconds.

 


 

A new warning to car owners looking to sell their car has been issued as Brits estimate they’ve missed out on an average of £1,600 when selling their car, with 45% have been left disappointed by how much they got when they sold their car.

Autotrader, UK's largest automotive marketplace, is urging car owners to check the value of their car before putting up for sale, given that  new research found that almost half (44%) of UK drivers don’t actually know what their car is worth or how to accurately check the value at all (51%). This is leaving them at risk of underselling when the time comes to part with it. In fact a quarter (25%) say they lost out on money specifically because they didn’t check the value of their car beforehand.

Part of the issue is the misconceptions around car selling and car valuations feeling like another piece of costly and time intensive life-admin. The disconnect is coming from the fact that almost a third (29%) think that getting a car valued takes several hours, despite it taking just 10 seconds using Autotrader’s valuation service.

And it’s not just about effort, as emotions play a role too. More than four in ten drivers (41%) say finding out their car’s real value worries them, while a third (33%) cite not knowing who to trust as their biggest frustration when buying or selling a car.

To help car owners quickly and confidently know what their car is worth, Autotrader has teamed up with viral food duo SpudBros to open the Autotater drive-thru in Manchester. The unique and immersive drive-thru experience, which opened for one day today in Manchester, gave drivers the chance to get a loaded jacket potato from SpudBros, whilst also getting their car valued in under 10 seconds using Autotrader’s valuation tool. The award-winning platform uses live market data from millions of listings to give drivers a clear, realistic view of what their car is worth right now to help them decide when to sell, how to price, or whether to hold onto it.
