'Middle-aged' EVs bolt ahead as the UK's fastest selling used cars
Electric Vehicles are flying off forecourts this month, with EVs accounting for seven of the ten fastest-selling used cars.
Used electric cars are currently selling in just 27 days - making electric the fastest-selling fuel type; 3-5-year-old ‘middle-aged’ EVs are taking just 22 days.
Vauxhall Corsa takes top position, selling in a rapid 11 days on average so far in September.
London, 26th September 2025 – According to Autotrader, the UK’s largest automotive platform, used cars are currently selling in just 29 days on average, one day quicker than the previous three-month average of 30 days. This speed of sale is indicative of a healthy and resilient market, underpinned by solid buyer activity on Autotrader, with the growing interest in electric vehicles playing an especially important role.
Electric vehicles (EVs) have been in high demand so far this September, with EVs making up seven of the ten fastest-selling used cars on the market. Currently, used electric cars are leaving forecourts in just 27 days on average, making electric the fastest-selling fuel type this month. And a more granular look at the data reveals that ‘middle-aged’ EVs – those aged 3-5-years-old – are selling even faster at a rate of just 22 days, faster than any other segment of the used car market. In fact, all seven electric models in the top ten fall within the 3 to 5-year-old age bracket. This highlights the increasing popularity of EVs in the second-hand market, as motorists seek out efficient and environmentally conscious options within an accessible price range. The swift turnover rate underscores the strong appetite for EVs in the UK’s used car market.
Selling 10 days faster than the used EV average, the Tesla Model Y (3 to 5 Years), the MG ZS (3 to 5 Years) and the Hyundai KONA (3 to 5 Years) are all selling in just 17 days so far this September. However, despite the dominance of electric models among the fastest sellers, it is the Vauxhall Corsa (petrol, up to 1 year) that claims the top spot, averaging an impressive 11 days to sell so far this September. This pace demonstrates the enduring popularity of the Corsa a staple in the used car market.
At the other end of the scale, diesel models account for half of the slowest-selling used cars this September, underscoring a significant shift in consumer preferences away from this fuel type. Indeed, diesel is currently the slowest-selling fuel type overall, selling two days slower than the market average (31 days average).
“The data is clear: electric cars are thriving in the used car market this month. Our top ten list this month, which is dominated by ‘middle-aged’ EVs, proves that when the price is right, there is an appetite from buyers to make the switch to electric. And the market as a whole is steadily accelerating too. For retailers, the opportunity is huge, but success depends on leveraging the latest market intelligence to price precisely, hit demand, and turn stock quickly while protecting margins.”
Whilst fastest selling data is based on past data, Autotrader retailer partners can access expected days to sell data for in and out of stock vehicles via Retail Check in Portal or through third party systems integrated through Autotrader Connect.
