“Despite the scrapping of the 2035 ban, the EU’s broader commitment to the EV transition remains clear. The huge investment by manufacturers in electric vehicle production means the phase-out of petrol and diesel cars is inevitable, it is just a question of when rather than if.
“In the UK, the transition is in full swing, with one in four new cars sold now electric and a growing used EV market. That means we shouldn’t be distracted by EU moves. Instead, UK policy must stay consistent and aligned with our own mandate to maintain consumer confidence and keep the transition on track. The last thing we want to do is send yet more mixed messages to switchers.”
