Autotrader champions women in tech on Ada Lovelace Day
Autotrader’s Women in Software Engineering (WiSE) community opens doors to local schools to inspire the next generation of data scientists and engineers.
Autotrader hosted its second annual ‘Ada Day’ event, named after computer pioneer Ada Lovelace, welcoming girls studying Computer Science from five local schools into its Manchester headquarters. Exploring careers in digital and software engineering, the day was led by Autotrader’s Women in Software Engineering (WiSE) community, in partnership with Manchester Digital’s programme ‘DigitalHER’. The outreach day allowed students an insight into how the FTSE 100 technology platform is actively breaking down barriers, nurturing talent pipelines and cultivating technical excellence.
Expert volunteers from the WiSE community partnered with students in 'Curious Conversations' sessions, giving the students space to ask questions directly and hear real-world career stories. Following some hands-on interactive workshops, where the students explored four core pillars of engineering and learnt essential skills for success in tech, the day concluded with an inspiring panel discussion sharing personal challenges faced by the women and the importance of diversity in the future of the profession.
One student on the day wrote that her biggest takeaway was that when it comes to careers ‘being a woman shouldn’t be a barrier from doing what you want or like’ while another shared that ‘There are lots of spaces for women in STEM and companies - such as Autotrader – make this happen.’
Our WiSE community is not only committed to supporting our Autotrader colleagues but also inspiring the next generation of female talent in engineering. ‘Ada Day’ is a chance for future talent to meet our team, ask questions and discover what a career in engineering could look like. I’m incredibly proud to be part of days like this, helping young people discover opportunities they might never have considered. A future in tech should feel open to everyone.

DigitalHER's mission is to inspire girls to strive and support women to thrive in tech. A big thank you to the Autotrader team for investing their time, opening up their workplace and sharing their experiences. If she can see it, she can be it. And we're helping to make that a reality for more girls and women.
